I have found myself thinking about our school more and more these days. It might be because I am fortunate enough to re-do my seventh year or because once this school year is over, I will join the ranks of alumni and memories will be all I have left. Regardless of the reason, I cannot seem to cut these thoughts short, and one of my thoughts revolve around one of the first things a first year encounters when he or she enter Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat.

The House we are sorted in to, will determine our foundation through out our education here. We will eat, sleep and study with fellow students for seven or, in my case, eight years here. We are all proud of our House and we all want to win the esteemed House cup. The Sorting Hat decides our House. It alone, knows why one is sorted in to Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. Or Ravenclaw or Slytherin for that matter. Now, as a young child, I too thought I knew how or why the Hat decided the way it does. In my naivety, I was certain it came down to the Hat being pro-Slytherin, since Slytherin clearly was the superior House. But as I grew up, I started to pay attention to the whole process, and what stood out to me was the song.

Each year the Hat sings a new one. And yes, we can all agree that the Hat is not very good at it, but the message is always the same one: all Houses are equal.

The founders of Hogwarts enchanted the Hat to carry out they collective wills long after they themselves were gone, and their message to us seems clear: Stand together, and I say, isn't it about time we started to listen?
